In April 2018, three families travelled together to the North Pole. The Garriott children were 3 and 5; our twins were 7. We wanted to show — to them and to other young people — that exploration doesn't have to wait for adulthood.

The expedition combined photography, education, and storytelling, with the aim of making the Arctic feel real to children who would never see it themselves. We also ran a North Pole marathon along the way.

On the science side, we collected Arctic water samples for Dr. Dimitri Deheyn's lab at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, contributing to global research on microfibres and microplastics that has since been featured in the New York Times.

Carrying Explorers Club Flag 61 connected the journey to a wider tradition of exploration, and gave three young families a place in it.
